Paint Carvings

I’ve historically used oils in my work, but in the past few years I’ve been carving into acrylic paint. This entails putting at least 100 layers of different paint colors on birch wood, then using tools to carve deep designs. I am enjoying the tactile nature of the process as well as the surprises that emerge as I work through all of the layers. This medium allows me to explore the dynamic interplay of colors, textures, and depth. It’s very satisfying to run your fingers across the design. To fully experience these paint carvings, you need to see and feel them. That’s why I say, PLEASE, DO TOUCH THE ARTWORK!

Carving through 100 or more layers of paint produces tons of colored shavings. I glue these shavings on top of birch wood to create different pieces of art—siblings of the carvings, you might say. I also use these shavings to create unique greeting cards. (Check out the “Greeting Cards” page.)
